Image Overlay
"X-Ray Vision"

Image Overlay (IO) is a unique 3D display technology that provides a combination of real and virtual environments. Originally designed for use with intraoperative surgical navigation, IO can be easily extended for visualization in any setting. Several mechanical designs are being tested, all of which utilize a flexible software library that allows the integration of data into surgical and clinical settings.

Image Overlay uses augmented reality display techniques to combine computer renderings with the user's view of the objects of interest. For example, a 3D image of a bone (reconstructed from CT data) can be displayed at exactly the location of the real bone, regardless of the position of either the surgeon or the patient. In effect, IO can provide the viewer with "X-ray vision" in a wide variety of applications. The user does not need to look away from the surgical field to view the image - it appears "within" the patient.

IO is a boom-mounted device, which allows the user's hands to remain free. The user can maintain attention on the patient and remain unencumbered by the weight of the device. The design of the device can remain relatively simple and inexpensive, compared to other augmented reality devices.
