Pittsburgh, Pa., April 29, 2013 – Blue Belt Technologies, Inc., an innovative medical technology company commercializing robotic solutions for orthopedic surgery and other applications where precision bone preparation is required, today announced the creation of a Scientific Advisory Board focused on femoroacetabular impingement (“FAI”) led by Dr. Robert Buly, Dr. Struan Coleman and Professor David Murray, MD. This advisory board will provide key clinical insight into the company’s efforts to develop and commercialize robotic-assisted technology for surgically treating FAI in the hip.

Dr. Buly, Associate Attending Orthopedic Surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, NY, has a practice focused on joint-preserving surgeries for both hip and knee. He is part of the Center for Hip Preservation at HSS and as a founding member of the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy (ISHA) has pioneered novel techniques to treat hip impingement arthroscopically. Dr. Buly is invited to lecture around the world to teach other surgeons about his techniques. Dr. Buly is also an Associate Professor of Clinical Orthopedic Surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and has his MS in Physiology from Penn State University.

Dr. Coleman, Associate Attending Orthopedic Surgeon at HSS, specializes in sports medicine where he treats orthopedic conditions of the shoulder, hip and knee. Dr. Coleman holds a PhD in Molecular Biology from Oxford University in England and combines a clinical practice in sports medicine with basic science research in the injury and repair of musculoskeletal tissues. Dr. Coleman is also an Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and is Head Team Physician for the New York Mets.

Professor Murray is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Oxford and a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford. He specializes in hip and knee surgery and has an international reputation for clinical research and development work in this field; his teams undertake biomechanical and clinical studies related to the hip and knee.

“I can’t wait to start working with the Blue Belt Team in developing an enabling robotic solution for FAI surgery. We are already off to a fast start as the Blue Belt technology is far ahead of any other solution,” said Dr. Buly. “I believe that Navio technology for FAI will accelerate utilization of an arthroscopic approach for treating FAI. The flexibility of a handheld robotic solution is what makes this opportunity so significant; it allows me to utilize advanced robotic technology through my normal arthroscopic approach for controlled bone resection.”

“Having worked closely with these world class surgeons for some time, we are delighted to formally announce the formation of this Board for our FAI application,” said Eric B. Timko, President and CEO of Blue Belt Technologies. “Our team at Blue Belt looks forward to working closely with Dr. Buly, Dr. Murray and Dr. Coleman in bringing our proprietary robotic technology to FAI, one of the fastest growing procedures in orthopedic surgery.”
FAI is a sports-medicine related pathology where the femoral head, acetabulum, or both do not fit normally in place due to an alteration in the shape of the femoral head or rim of the acetabulum. The result is increased friction during hip movements that may damage the hip joint. It is estimated that 50% of total hip replacement patients are candidates for FAI treatment instead of having the joint replaced.

Current procedures aimed at treating FAI involve free-hand bone shaving in an arthroscopic approach, or an open surgical approach. Both of these approaches are subject to inaccurate bone preparation, low-visibility in the arthroscopic procedure, invasiveness in the open procedure, and limited preoperative planning abilities. Enabling technologies currently in development are missing the execution phase of the FAI procedure. Blue Belt can apply their patented precision freehand sculpting technology to enable precise and repeatable results.

The company’s NavioPFS™ System incorporates patented technology to provide precise robotic control to surgeons via an intelligent, handheld, computer assisted bone cutting tool.
Blue Belt Technologies announces the first NavioPFS™ Unicondylar Knee Replacement surgery performed in the US

PITTSBURGH, PA. (February 14, 2013) – Blue Belt Technologies, Inc., the innovative medical technology company that markets its NavioPFS™ orthopedic surgical system with precision robotics for unicondylar knee replacement, today announced the first three Unicondylar Knee Replacement (UKR) surgeries performed in the U.S. with the NavioPFS system. Dr. D. Kevin Lester, of Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, CA, performed three NavioPFS surgeries for patients suffering from medial osteoarthritis, marking the initial use of the NavioPFS system at Community Regional, which was the first hospital in the country to install the system in late January, 2013.

The NavioPFS™ surgical system represents the next generation of precision orthopedic surgery, with an initial indication for use in UKR procedures, and a wide array of future applications in development. Blue Belt received 510(k) clearance to sell and market the NavioPFS system in the United States on November 30, 2012.
“The NavioPFS system worked perfectly, allowing me to plan my surgery exactly as I wished, and executing that plan precisely as intended,” said Dr. Lester, an orthopedic surgeon at Community Regional. “In partial knee replacements, maintaining the integrity and balance of the soft-tissue envelope is a difficult variable to properly control when using manual instrumentation. Using the NavioPFS, this step is seamlessly integrated into the system, and the robotic handpiece allows for precise and repeatable bone preparation. I am looking forward to continuing to offer this new and excellent option to my patients.”

Utilizing the integrated CT-free navigation system with intraoperative registration and planning, Dr. Lester successfully planned two left-medial and one right-medial partial knee replacement surgeries and executed bone preparation through a less-invasive incision using the NavioPFS precision freehand sculpting handpiece.
“Performing three surgeries out of the gate in the United States is a significant milestone for us and confirms that Dr. Lester and Community Regional will be excellent partners for us and our technology moving forward,” said Eric B. Timko, President and CEO of Blue Belt Technologies. “We are all very pleased with the initial results and look forward to continued success as we begin our commercialization, both in the U.S. and European markets.”

Blue Belt Technologies, Inc.

Blue Belt Technologies, Inc. has developed the next generation of “smart” surgical instruments with precision robotics for use initially in orthopedic procedures and then for other surgical specialties, including neurosurgery, spinal and otolaryngology (ENT). The company’s NavioPFS System incorporates patented technology to provide precise robotic control to surgeons via an intelligent, handheld, computer-assisted bone-cutting tool. The NavioPFS System provides the surgeon with a layer of safety and enhanced accuracy while performing bone-shaping tasks through minimally invasive incisions.

Blue Belt Technologies Receives FDA Clearance to Market its NavioPFS Surgical System for Unicondylar Knee Replacement Surgery

PITTSBURGH, PA. (December 10, 2012) – Blue Belt Technologies, Inc., an innovative medical technology company focused on commercializing a precision robotic solution for orthopedic surgery, today announced that it has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market its NavioPFS™ orthopedic surgical system.

The Company’s initial clearance in the United States is for Unicondylar Knee Replacement (“UKR”) which is commonly known as partial knee replacement. A partial knee replacement is surgery that may replace the osteoarthritic portion of the inside (medial) and/or outside (lateral) compartment of the knee with an implant prosthesis. The majority of partial knee replacement surgeries are currently performed using manual instruments which can be inconsistent and lead to high revision and retreatment rates.

Blue Belt’s NavioPFS system incorporates patented technology to provide precision to surgeons via smart instrumentation with robotic control. The NavioPFS delivers intra-operative navigation and 3D visualization during the surgery based on a seamless CT-free registration process.
The Company’s NavioPFS, for use in UKR surgery, received CE Mark in February 2012 and the Company has completed clinical casework since then in Belgium and the United Kingdom where the system has produced excellent early clinical results.

Mr. Eric B. Timko, President and CEO of Blue Belt Technologies said, “We could not be any more excited to gain FDA clearance of our NavioPFS system. The entire Blue Belt team, including our physician advisors, has remained committed to providing orthopedic surgeons and hospitals a more precise and consistent technique to perform UKR procedures that takes into consideration the current economic environment in our healthcare system. We are confident that NavioPFS accomplishes these goals, and provides excellent results for patients.” The Company will commence commercialization in the U.S. immediately for the UKR application and is continuing to develop other applications where the system can be utilized to perform precision bone shaping procedures.
